Step 1

Cream the yeast in a small bowl with 3 tablespoons of luke warm water and 1 teaspoon of sugar, until dissolved and becomes frothy. Sift the flour and salt into a large bowl and stir in the aniseed and sesame seeds. Make a well in the centre of the flour and add the yeast mixture, oil, egg and the rest of the sugar. Pour in the remaining lukewarm water using your hands to draw in the flour from the sides to form a smooth dough.

Step 2

Take the dough out of the bowl and knead it on a lightly floured surface for about 10 minutes until it becomes light and elastic. divide the dough into two balls and divide each ball into three. knead and strech the first three into ropes about 30cm long. line the ropes side by side and braid them together.pinch the ends together. Repeat with the other  three balls of dough to form a second loaf.

Place the two braided loaves on a floured baking sheet. Cover the with a damp kitchen towl and leave them in a warm place for about an hour, until the dough is doubled in size.

Step 4

Preheat the oven to 180 degrees, To  make the glaze, put the egg and milk in a bowl and beat well. Brush it over the loaves. Sprinkle the tops with sesame seeds and bake them in a pre-heated oven for about 40 minutes, until the loaves sound hollow when you tap them on the base. Cool a little, then serve with jam, honey or as an accompaniment to savory dishes.
